Week 1- 1 September
Introduction - What are we doing this semester?
Equipment Overview - it will be important for everyone to know what belongs in the equipment bags, how to pack them, how to check them out. Go over equipment policies.
E-Portfolios - you will need to make sure you have an e-portfolio set up by next week
Intro to Cameras
- Tripod operation
- Focus
- Aperture, Exposure, and Depth of Field (bokeh and contre jour)
- Steadying the Camera
- Types of Shots – importance of the close-up
- Rule of Thirds
- Finding depth - how to make a good shot more interesting
Guest Visit: CMCI Media Studies Professor Andrew Calabrese - will chat about his documentary project about alternative agriculture. Students in the class will assist shooting interviews and collecting b-roll
Assignment #1: Practice Compositions - use your mobile phone camera to get 10 shots of objects around you, each with a different composition. Choose one of your best shots to show in class next week. Due Friday 8 September
Assignment #2: Come up with unique ways to move the camera. Use your mobile phone camera and record 5 shots up to 10 seconds each. Show in class next week. Due Friday 8 September
Assignment #3: For class next Friday, come up with a news package you found online and provide a link. Evaluate the package in a 2-page written critique and discuss in class next week. Due Friday 8 September
